MINUTES OF A BLUE RIBBON CORE COMMITTEE MEETING FOR
THE CITY OF FENNIMORE FOR THE 2007 LINCOLN AVENUE PROJECT
HELD ON THURSDAY, MARCH 2, 2006, beginning at noon
Present: Dick Rogers, Steve Lendosky, Denise Tolzman, Pam Kreul, Correne Morgan, Linda Parrish, John Murphy and Margaret Sprague.
The following committee reports were made:
- Signage and Advertising - No new information since last meeting. DPW asked that the committee assist him in preparing sign location and timetable information for use during the construction project. The information will be shared with the Business Focus Committee so they can provide it to business owners. The committee was asked to put together sign cost information for public parking areas, to be designated through the survey being done by the Downtown Business Focus Committee.
- Beautification of the Downtown (Design) - Project costs totaling just over $150,000 were shared with the committee as well as information of benches, waste receptacles, planters and trees. This information will be used for a Transportation Enhancement grant application to be written by Margaret Sprague and John Murphy. A signage grant for street names will also be submitted to the DOT. The DPW would like to see the information signs updated as part of the project also. The Downtown Design Committee will meet soon to review this information.
- Streets Research - has not held a meeting recently. Will assist the "Downtown Business Focus" Committee with contacting local property owners to gather information with their upcoming survey.
- Downtown Business Focus - They met a few weeks ago. They have a draft survey ready. Some new questions were added, especially relating to possible public parking. The committee expects to complete the survey by the middle of May. City funds will be used to pay for materials for the Brick Laying Class to lay a rear access walkway on the west side of Lincoln Avenue from 11th Street, south to the furniture store to provide rear access in that block.
- Fundraising Committee -
- Dance Classes-10 couples signed up so far. Karla will be contacting others who showed interest. Attracting several out-of-town couples.
- Texas Hold'EM Poker Tournament - Steve Lendosky reported on the February 11th event that was held February 11th and raised over $1100. There were 32 participants, several from out of town. The next event will be April 15th beginning at 3 p.m. at the Pig's Eye Pub. Funds are being held by Fennimore Area Foundation.
- Hardees Combo Fundraiser-These $1 donation cards will be a special fundraiser for the 2007 Lincoln Avenue project. The project runs from April through December. The donation cards will be distributed with utility bills, at the Tech School, at businesses and any other way committee members can come up with. They are good in Dodgeville also so they will be asked to assist us with the project.
- Wine & Cheese Tasting Social - Final details have not been worked out yet. John Murphy will try to get this scheduled soon. Talked about location options-Eagle Creek Inn (inside event) and Canterbury Gardens (outside event this spring). More information at next meeting.
- Hardees Combo Fundraiser - The project will run from April through December. Plans for distributing the coupons are being made.
- Distribution of funds raised - Concerns expressed about goals and priorities for distributing funds raised. Need to work this out. Will include a question on the survey about businesses needs during the project.
- Talked about establishing a theme for the construction project and developing a logo. Correne and Denise will work on promoting a contest for this. The prize will be $50 in Fennimore bucks.
- Talked about the April 6th Chamber meeting. The focus will be on the 2007 construction project. Jeremy Krachey from DOT will attend. The Viroqua rep. can no longer attend. Linda will ask if she can do a video. Look at someone from Mt. Horeb, Reedsburg or Boscobel to attend to offer "do's and don'ts". Meeting will be held at Eagle Creek Inn.
- Asked that the Chamber consider organizing some events such as a "Jack Hammer Party" and a "Street Dance".
- Public Information meeting with DOT-asked that this be scheduled prior to Memorial Day.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 5th at noon. This meeting was adjourned at 1:05 p.m.
