Blue Ribbon - Lincoln Avenue 2007 Street Project

MINUTES OF A BLUE RIBBON CORE COMMITTEE MEETING
FOR THE CITY OF FENNIMORE, GRANT COUNTY, WISCONSIN
HELD ON THURSDAY, MAY 11, 2006, beginning at noon

Present were: Steve Lendosky, Karla Witzig, Margaret Sprague, John Murphy, Linda Parrish and Pam Kreul.

Follow-up to April Chamber Meeting-Promotional Activities: Chamber feels the Blue Ribbon Committee should be in charge of special activities for the 2007 Lincoln Avenue project. Correne Morgan, Denise Tolzman and Linda Parrish will develop a promotional plan.

The group discussed the criteria and purposes for the fundraising for the project. The April 5th minutes need to be amended to show the fundraising goal is $20,000, not $25,000. Categories of spending include external marketing, internal marketing, special events, walkway for back door access (1100 block) and miscellaneous. (See criteria sheet at end of minutes.) Over half of the money has been raised. Part of the money is being held by the Fennimore Area Foundation and part of the money is being held by the City.

Correne wants to include an article in the Fennimore Times concerning the stages of the 2007 project. The City will be signing off on the plans next week. The schedule should be final at that time.

Signage & Advertising: The committee will meet in June. They will have a list of businesses who want to participate in the sign program. They will work with the DPW on locations for the signs. The DOT will relax their location requirements. City will also relax their sign regulations during the project. Business owners will be responsible for signage. They will need to make a contribution toward the cost of the group business signs, estimated at $40.

Beautification of the Downtown: The City will hear from the DOT in September on the transportation enhancement grant application. Dick Rogers will need to follow up on the Railroad Commission's interest in providing funding for street light banners with the railroad theme.

Streets Research: no meeting held.

Downtown Business Focus: Committee members are in the process of gathering information through a survey. Expect to be done by the end of May. Kwik Trip, Our Little Restaurant and Amy's Floral have expressed some concerns about the project and customer access. Overall, concerns are minor. 8th Street will be a cross-street for traffic, which should help Kwik Trip.

Fundraising:

  • Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament- is now being held at Pig's Eye Pub. $457 profit from April 15th tournament. Next event is June 24th.
  • Ballroom Dance Class- will generate an $1150 profit. Going well. May hold a fall session.
  • Wine & Cheese Tasting Social-scheduled for July 9th at Eagle Creek Inn and will feature Wisconsin wines.
  • Hardees Combo Fundraiser-need ideas on promoting this, possibly promote awareness through the Fennimore Times.
  • Dart Tournament-in Eagle Creek Inn's Court. Pru Stender initiated this project.
  • Variety Show/Chili Supper or Cook Off-possibly in December or January. Sarah Lendosky is chairing this project.
  • Street Dance-Chamber is interested in sponsoring when the street is closed, schedule for July 2007. Lloyd Tarrell wants to help with this. Possibly have the chamber sell sandwiches and soda on the street and the bars handle the alcohol indoors and pay for the band.
  • Flea Market-Dick Rogers has some ideas on this.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, June 8th at noon.
