Construction Work - September 4, 2007
- Road work taking place the first week of September includes:
- A-1 Excavating will continue to work on underground sanitary, water and storm sewer from 10th to 4th Street.
- A-1 Excavating grading crew will continue moving from 10th Street to the north putting the base in place.
- Gravel is now in place at 8th, 10th and 11th Street intersections and may be used to cross Lincoln Avenue. Intersections will not be paved for several weeks.
- Starting September 4 Hwy 61 traffic coming from the north will not be allowed to turn east for approximately three days. Access to businesses on the east side will need to follow the Washington Street detour to 12th and then north on Jefferson Street. Speedy Mart and ReMax customers will have access from 4th Street only. The 4th and Lincoln Avenue intersection will be limited to one lane traffic; a flag crew will be present.
- When the final stages of underground utilities are hooked up at the junctions of 4th and Lincoln Avenue going across to Bender's Foods there will be a short period of time the 4th and Lincoln intersection will be closed entirely. During this time traffic should use Second Street and then south on Madison Street to get back to the detour route.
Sidewalks - Back or side door access is recommended to most businesses at this time. Crews will continue to remove sidewalks which will be replaced with gravel as soon as possible.
Madison Street Limited Parking
- Starting Sept. 4 traffic changes went into effect on Madison Street which passes by the Fennimore Elementary School. No parking will be allowed on the west side of Madison Street from Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Parking on the east side of Madison Street will not be affected.
- These changes were made to ensure safety of school children.
- Speed limit is 15 mph in school zones or when children are present.
- Business owners and their employees are encouraged to park at St. Mary's parking lot or the north side of the Fennimore Fire Department to leave convenient parking for customers.
- Local traffic is encouraged to use the official detour route of 12th and Washington Street to help ease the heavy traffic on Madison Street.
- Parents planning to drop off or pick up students at school must use 8th Street at the side entrance of the elementary school. Until construction is completed, NO vehicles (other than buses) will be allowed to stop on Madison Street for any reason.
- The school district also offers bus pick up locations at several areas of the community (refer to the recent school district newsletter). The Blue Ribbon committee suggests school buses are the safest means of transportation for school children.
- Youth walking to the elementary school from the east side of Lincoln Avenue north of 12th Street have three graveled access routes at 8th, 10th and 11th Street going across Lincoln Avenue. Keep in mind there is no Lincoln Avenue cross traffic however pedestrians will have to watch for traffic.
- There is only one crossing guard - at the 8th Street and Madison intersection.
- Bus Traffic
- Morning - elementary school students will be dropped off the bus on west Madison Street next to the curb at the front entrance of the elementary school.
- Afternoon - buses will park diagonally to pick up students at the end of the school day. The public should keep in mind there will be times before and at the end of the school day when Madison Street will be closed between 8th and 9th Street and only buses will be allowed in that area.
- Parents are encouraged to talk with their children in regard to traffic safety and any plans for pick up at the end of the school day.
Public parking areas
- St. Mary's Parking lot at Jefferson and 9th Street
- North side of the Fennimore Fire and Rescue Building - parking will not be allowed near the Fire-Rescue Building. Absolutely NO parking on the East or South Side of Fire-Rescue Building.
- Business owners and their employees are asked to leave any side street parking and Madison Street open for customers.
- Some businesses will have "customer only" parking behind their business place, we ask you to please observe the signs.
- It is the business responsibility to install "Customer Only" parking signs.
Stage Four Detour
12th and Washington Street will serve as the official detour route for all traffic during stage four of the road construction. The public should note this detour runs through a residential area. Keep in mind the speed limit for the detour route is 25 mph. Residents must keep in mind street side parking will not be allowed along the 12th and Washington Street detour route; residents must park in their driveway or yard.
Public Road Construction Meeting
The next public meeting will be held Wednesday, September 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Fennimore Memorial building.
Note: the report is our best estimation and can be affected by weather or other items beyond our control.
