Focus on Energy website

Saving Energy

In order to save energy, and money, one of the easiest things you can do is lower your water heater temperature setting. We suggest setting your water heater at no higher than 125 degrees. Your water heater can account for up to 20% of your energy costs. The "touch temperature" for hot water is 105 degrees, and at 115 degrees water can cause first degree burns. Many water heaters are set at 150 to 180 degrees. These high settings supply you with an almost endless amount of hot water, however, they waste a lot of energy and may cause severe burns.

Another energy saving tip is to turn off your water heater when you are away from home for several days. This is an obvious energy saver.

Also, locating your water heater as close as possible to the place of greatest use – probably the bathroom kitchen or laundry room – saves you long pipe runs, which lose heat. Insulate your hot water pipes if it´s impractical to move the water heater. If locations of hot water needs are widely separated, you may find it economical to install a second water heater.

Learning the conservation "habit" takes practice, but it will pay off in dollar dividends.

Load Management Program

Electric Utility Customers Mandated to Participate in Load Management Program

The City Council of the City of Fennimore has mandated that customers of Fennimore Electric utility participate in the load management program. Customers of Fennimore Electric Utility who have a central air conditioner unit and/or an electric hot water heater are required to participate in the Utility's load management program. You will do your part to reduce the peak load by allowing Fennimore Electric Utility to turn your central air conditioner and/or electric water heater "off and on" for brief periods during peak system usage.

These brief periods last only 7 ½ minutes of every hour. Load management saves money by moving some load away from any period that is likely to establish a seasonal peak load.

You can obtain more information about this program at the Utility Business Office, 860 Lincoln Avenue, Fennimore, WI, 53809, 608-822-6119.

Cross Connection Inspection

The Fennimore Water Utility is required by the Department of Natural Resources to make these inspections. A cross-connection is defined as any physical connection or arrangement between two otherwise separate systems, one of which contains drinkable water from the City of Fennimore water system, and the other water, from a private source. Water of unknown or questionable safety, or steam, gases or chemicals whereby there maybe flow from one system to the other, the direction of flow depending on pressure differential between the two systems. This could be as simple as a garden hose, connected to a faucet, without back flow prevention, with the other end of the hose laying in a bucket, or connected to a sprayer containing fertilizer, insecticides or other chemicals and have a loss of pressure on the city main which would siphon contaminates into the city water supply system. Your cooperation by allowing utility employees to make this inspection, although mandated, is greatly appreciated.

Insufficient funds charge

A $15.00 charge will be applied to the customer's account when a check rendered for utility service is returned for insufficient funds.
