Letter to Fennimore Times Editor: Memorial Park is seeking addition of new tablet
For some time now, Fennimore Memorial Park has been criticized for not honoring our fallen veterans. A suggestion has been made to add a symbol to our tablets designating killed in action. These tablets were designed to honor all veterans in the era in which they served. Regardless of rank or military service. We have declined because we felt it was not the proper way to honor our fallen veterans.
In April some members of the Auxiliary, Legion, and Roddy Dull from Eternal Art Monuments met to discuss what we could do. After hearing many pros and cons we decided to erect another monument in the park. With Eternal Arts doing the project, this stone would be the same as all the other tablets. Also black and designed to compliment the park. One side of his specific tablet would be dedicated to those who did not return home alive. These soldiers were either killed in action or declared missing in action. Special recognition would be given here to those having made the ultimate sacrifice. Their lives for their country and for you. The other side of the tablet would be dedicated to those servicemen who lost their lives, but not combat related, while proudly wearing the military uniform of this country. Our POW, Wounded Warriors, disabled, mentally ill, victims of Agent Orange, and those who silently still suffer from the ravages of war in their hearts. It would also be dedicated to all our veterans who were able to return safely to their homeland and families.
This is our goal. If and when it happens, of course, will up to community support. The estimated cost of this project is $10,000. Again, Memorial Park is asking the community to support us in this project. As with the original park, all donations should be made to MidWestOne Bank, American Legion Auxiliary #184, Fennimore Memorial Park Fund, 1055 Lincoln Avenue, Fennimore, WI 53809.
